Wincarnis cocktails

From the brand's own Gin and Win to the Jamaican way with stout and milk.

Wincarnis is malty, spiced and herbal, closer to a cream sherry than to Buckfast. It is usually drunk neat as an aperitif, but it also mixes well. The Gin and Win is the brand's own idea, and stout with milk is a popular way to drink it in Jamaica. The proportions below are ours.

Traditional

Wincarnis neat

The classic aperitif, slightly chilled or at room temperature.

Glass:
Small wine or sherry glass
Alcohol:
about 0.7 units

Ingredients

  • 50 ml Wincarnis

Method

  1. Pour into a small glass, slightly chilled or at room temperature.

Gin and Win

The brand's suggested mix of gin and Wincarnis. The proportions are ours.

Glass:
Rocks glass
Alcohol:
about 1.7 units

Ingredients

  • 25 ml gin
  • 50 ml Wincarnis
  • Ice
  • A strip of lemon peel

Method

  1. Add the gin and Wincarnis to a rocks glass with ice.
  2. Stir until chilled.
  3. Twist the lemon peel over the glass and drop it in.

Traditional

Wincarnis stout punch

A Jamaican-style mix of Wincarnis, stout and milk. The proportions are ours.

Glass:
Highball glass
Alcohol:
about 1.33 units

Ingredients

  • 50 ml Wincarnis
  • 150 ml stout
  • 50 ml milk
  • 1 tbsp condensed milk (optional)
  • Ice
  • Grated nutmeg

Method

  1. Add the Wincarnis, stout, milk and condensed milk to a jug or blender with a handful of ice.
  2. Stir or blend briefly until smooth and frothy.
  3. Pour into a highball glass and finish with a little grated nutmeg.

Wincarnis toddy

A warming winter drink.

Glass:
Heatproof glass or mug
Alcohol:
about 0.7 units

Ingredients

  • 50 ml Wincarnis
  • 100 ml hot water
  • 1 tsp honey
  • A slice of lemon
  • 1 cinnamon stick

Method

  1. Put the cinnamon stick, honey and lemon in a heatproof glass.
  2. Add the hot water and stir to dissolve the honey.
  3. Add the Wincarnis and serve warm.
  • Units are calculated as ABV x volume in litres, assuming 40% gin and rum, 25% Campari, 12% sparkling wine and 4.2% stout. Check your own bottles.
